Emira Barucija, of Lynn, was in the crosswalk near 1000 Western Avenue (Route 107) when she was struck by a vehicle around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, Lynn Police report. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lynn Police were detouring traffic at Ida Street as a result, according to MassDOT Spokesperson Jacquelyn Goddard on Twitter.
The driver of the involved vehicle then left the scene of the crash, Lynn Police said. A vehicle matching the description was later towed from a parking garage in Boston and confirmed to be the vehicle involved in the fatal crash, according to WCVB.
Police have also identified the suspect driver but have yet to release their name. So far no arrests have been made and the crash remains under investigation.
A member of the North Shore Islamic Center, Barucija came to the United States from Bosnia with her husband "to find a better life," a GoFundMe campaign created in her honor reads.
"She loved children and was involved with many activities at the NSIC. She always had a kind word to say and a warm smile to share," the campaign reads. "All who knew her loved her sweet smile, and her kind, quiet and unassuming nature."
Barucija was also a member of the Environmental Services team at Salem Hospital since 2020, the hospital said in a statement.
"Emira was well-liked by all who knew her. Her warmth, kind smile, and quiet, yet calming demeanor will be greatly missed, the statement read. "We express our deepest sympathies to Emira’s husband, family, and friends, and all those who loved her.”
